Abstract: This study examines the relationship between parental neglect and adolescent delinquency, focusing on immediate behavioral impacts. Using data from Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (Add Health), the analysis investigates how two aspects of neglect—perceived familial understanding and attention—correlate with delinquent behaviors. In this study, delinquency is a categorical variable defined as the occurrence of three behaviors (graffiti, shoplifting, and violence). A third variable, whether or not adolescents learned how to deal with conflict in school, was added later in the model to serve and a control. Findings confirm that adolescents exposed to greater levels of neglect are more likely to engage in delinquent acts. By identifying specific factors of neglect that most strongly influence delinquency, the study aims to inform early interventions and improve societal safety through targeted preventive measures.
